After an exciting Week 1 of the 2024 college football season , fans salivating for more action don’t even have to wait for the weekend to see a game between two major-conference teams.
On Friday night, BYU will travel to Dallas to take on SMU at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in a matchup between two of the newest inclusions to their respective conferences.
The Cougars entered their second season in the Big 12 with modest expectations after being picked to finish 13 in what’s now a 16-team conference. Coach Kalani Sitake’s team rolled to a 41-13 victory in its 2024 season opener against FCS Southern Illinois, with quarterback Jake Retzlaff throwing for a career-high 348 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

The Mustangs are off to a 2-0 start in their debut season in the ACC, though their two wins to this point, have come against Nevada and Houston Christian. The offensive firepower many expected from coach Rhett Lashlee’s team has been on display thus far, with SMU racking up 1,003 total yards in its first two games.
Friday’s meeting is part of a two-game series between the two that was announced last October, with the second contest scheduled for 2027 at BYU’s LaVell Edwards Stadium.
BYU and SMU have four all-time meetings, with the Cougars winning all four of those matchups. The series is perhaps most famous for its first installment, when BYU came back from a 20-point deficit in the final four minutes to stun SMU 46-45 in the 1980 Holiday Bowl.

The Cougars and Mustangs will face off in a nationally televised matchup on ESPN2. Anish Shroff (play-by-play) and Andre Ware (analyst) will be on the call while Paul Carcaterra will serve as the sideline reporter.
