In his first drive in black and gold, rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler led the New Orleans Saints to a touchdown. It was the best drive of the day for the offense and the first trip to the end zone for the Saints on the night.

Rattler only dropped back three times, but he showed flashes on those drop backs. His first pass attempt was a deep shot to A.T. Perry. This comes on the heels of Perry’s big reception before halftime. Rattler put the ball on Perry, but the Cardinals’ defender was called for pass interference.

Rattler executed a play action roll out and hit tight end Dallin Holker on an easy dump-off. That was technically the only passing attempt on the drive for Rattler.

    Then came the highlight.

On Rattler’s third dropback, there was nothing available. So the rookie took matters into his own hands. Rattler took off running to the wide side of the field. As he neared the end zone, he absorbed contact from the defense and extended the ball ahead as he was driven out of bounds. The play was initially ruled short, but head coach Dennis Allen challenged the spot, and upon review it was confirmed that he did break the plane.

It was an emphatic start to the preseason for the rookie as he scored his first touchdown.
