Giants turn to TE Tyree Jackson as emergency quarterback

New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock suffered a hip injury during Thursday’s preseason-opening victory over the Detroit Lions, but it remains unclear how much time he’ll miss.

Initially, the Giants downplayed Lock’s injury, implying it was minor and insignificant. Multiple conflicting reports later suggested he could miss a couple of days or up to several weeks.

On Monday, before the team took the field for practice, head coach Brian Daboll once again suggested Lock would be out just a few days.

Daboll also said the team will neither work out nor sign a replacement quarterback, instead leaning on tight end Tyree Jackson as their emergency option.

The 26-year-old Jackson, who originally signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2019 when Daboll was their offensive coordinator, began his NFL career as a quarterback. He later transitioned to tight end in 2021 as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Back in college as a member of the Buffalo Bulls (MAC), Jackson appeared in 33 games, completing 55.8% of his passes for 6,999 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. He also rushed for an additional 757 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Jackson will take some snaps at quarterback in practice while Lock recovers, but it remains to be seen if he’s used in an actual preseason game.
