Jordan Whittington wasted no time making a statement in Sunday’s preseason game against the Cowboys. Ironic that Whittington, once a star pass catcher for the Texas Longhorns, torched the Dallas Cowboys at SoFi Stadium.

He had a team-leading six receptions and 74 yards. While quarterback Stetson Bennett struggled, Whittington was a model of consistency for the team.

Whittington looked like a man among boys, displaying the physicality, strength and pursuit of contact that makes a pass catcher dangerous. He displayed blazing speed in open space, making him a threat all across the field.

Whittington also displayed a shocking amount of toughness as in the second quarter, he hauled a pass in before getting absolutely whacked by Dallas’ Juanyeh Thomas. Not only was the hit vicious, it also occurred right as Whittington turned his head. A near blindside hit was quickly shaken off with an exuberant celebration and an eruption from the Rams’ sideline.

All things told, Whittington put on a phenomenal performance in his first real NFL test. Most of the time, rookie draft picks make the 53-man roster but Whittington’s sixth-round selection status automatically put him on the bubble.

With a performance like Sunday’s, combined with the positive reports from camp he’s been receiving, Whittington put on foot in the door and should almost certainly make the team.
