While it appeared natural, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig’s passionate speech last week was an aberration from his typical mode of leadership.

In an interview with Buffaloes Wire during Colorado’s fall sports media day, the veteran safety shared that he prefers to let his work ethic do the talking. However, Silmon-Craig will become vocal when necessary, especially if he’s noticing a lack of passion.

“I’m more of a lead-by-example guy,” Silmon-Craig told Buffaloes Wire. “I’m gonna do it first and then I’m gonna tell you how to do it. I’ve played a lot of football and I’ve seen a lot of people say they’re leaders and put talk before action. People really respect it more if you’re a guy that (does it). When the new guys came in the spring, I didn’t say nothing for two weeks straight. I just worked my butt off every day so when I do say something, it’s respected. Like yesterday in the speech, I never really say nothing, so when I do talk people are listening.”

Silmon-Craig, who began his college football career playing for CU head coach Deion Sanders at Jackson State, added that compared to last year, the Buffs’ locker room is more conducive to players speaking their minds.
