Colts' OL Josh Sills ruled out of preseason game vs. Cardinals

It was announced in the third quarter that offensive lineman Josh Sills was ruled out of the Colts’ preseason game versus the Arizona Cardinals.

Sills suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter. CBS4 reported that he got it taped up and was running along the sidelines at one point, but ultimately he will not return.

On the Colts’ unofficial depth chart, Sills–along with Dalton Tucker–is listed as the backup right guard behind Will Fries. However, against Denver last week and then in this game against Arizona, Sills was at left guard.

In Week 1 of the preseason, PFF credited Sills with allowing one pressure in 26 pass-blocking snaps.

If the Colts are going to roster nine offensive linemen on the 53-man, then there may only be one roster spot up for grabs. If the team goes heavy and keeps 10, then there will potentially be two spots available.

From the outside looking in, it seems like it is Sills, Tucker, and Danny Pinter competing for those one-to-two spots. As an undrafted rookie, Tucker’s upside and potential will work in his favor when it comes to this decision. Versatility along the interior will also be important.

“You’re dressing 48 guys, eight linemen,” said GM Chris Ballard after the draft. “If you draft an offensive lineman, to just play one position, unless you’re the starter makes it very difficult. You need to have a guy that can play both tackle spots, a guy that can play both guard spots and swing. And really, two more guys that can snap the football.”
