With three practices this week prior to the preseason finale Sunday in Denver, the Arizona Cardinals were still busy bringing in three new players. All played this spring in the UFL where the season ended in June.

After the signing of defensive lineman T.J. Carter (Michigan Panthers) and linebacker Chris Garrett (St. Louis Battlehawks) Tuesday, tight end Sage Surratt (Memphis Showboats) was signed Wednesday after having a tryout the day before.

To make room on the roster, wide receiver Daniel Arias was placed on waivers.

Surratt was an undrafted free agent with the Lions in 2021 and was waived on Aug. 31. He was signed to the practice squad the next day, but was released two weeks later.

After playing for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL in 2022, Surratt was signed by the Chargers on July 31 and waived with an injury settlement on Aug. 30. He played with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers in 2023, but wasn’t in an NFL camp that year.

In 10 games with the Showboats this year, he had 27 receptions for 269 yards and two touchdowns. His brother Chazz played 14 games for the New York Jets last season and was a third-round pick by the Vikings in 2021.

Arriving this late with cuts looming after Sunday’s game against the Broncos is difficult, but head coach Jonathan Gannon said before practice of Carter and Garrett, “We want to see what they can do and they’ve been good in meetings so far. So we’ll get them on the grass and get them ready to go.”

The media wasn’t aware of Surratt’s signing until after Gannon spoke, but he was on the practice field Wednesday.
