A look back at the extensive history between Oregon Ducks and Idaho Vandals

After what feels like forever, the Oregon Ducks are just days away from kicking off their 2024 football season with a Week 1 matchup against the Idaho Vandals. Throughout the season, one of the ways we will preview Oregon’s weekly matchup is by looking at the history of the series between the Ducks and their given opponent.

Before I began researching for this story, I expected Oregon and Idaho to have a handful of past matchups, but nothing crazy. However, beginning with their first game in 1906, the Ducks and the Vandals have matched up 59 times in total.

Despite the frequency of this matchup, Idaho has had little to no success in its history against Oregon. In the 59 games between these two teams, Idaho has won just three times. Four games have ended in ties, and the Ducks have won 52 times over the Vandals.

The Vandals ‘ most recent win over Oregon came 74 years ago in the Ducks’ worst season by win percentage in their 130-year history. The 1950 Ducks were coached by Jim Aiken (in his fourth year with Oregon) and finished 1-9, with their sole win coming against Montana. Idaho beat the Ducks 14-0 that season.

Since that day in 1950, the Ducks have been on a 23-game win streak over the Vandals. The last game between these two teams was 20 years ago when we saw Mike Belloti’s Oregon Ducks handle the Vandals 48-10. Saturday’s game will likely have a similar score, and it will hopefully be an appetizer for a historic season of Oregon football.
