Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman deserves a chance to redeem himself

Texas A&M’s 2024 season opener vs. No. 7 Notre Dame resulted in a 23-13 Aggie loss, but the final score does not tell the whole story.

Through four quarters, A&M’s defense held strong outside of allowing nearly 200 yards on the ground. However, credit must be given to Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard, who made several clutch throws to drive the Irish down the field late and secure the critical victory.

On the flip side, Texas A&M’s offense, particularly in the air, left much to be desired. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman’s performance was less than stellar, with 100 yards and two interceptions. However, this is just the beginning of the season, and there’s ample opportunity for improvement.

A player known for his accuracy and touch, Weigman air-mailed a a throw to junior wide receiver Noah Thomas in the first half that led to his first interception while failing to hit his receivers in the numbers throughout the night. However, going off of the tape, Texas A&M’s wide receiver rotation failed to gain separation on most of their routes.

Look, Weigman was awful, but from this writer’s point of view, this is a one-game sample after a year of not seeing the field, so it’s more than appropriate to give some grace to a player with only 10 career collegiate starts to right his wrongs and improve in the pocket.

Next, Texas A&M will host McNeese on Saturday, Sept. 7, providing Weigman and the offense a great opportunity to flip the script and prove that the offense isn’t stale and predictable.
