Editor’s note : Coughlin has been re-signed to the practice squad and fullback Jakob Johnson was released to make room for him.

The New York Giants released veteran linebacker Carter Coughlin on Thursday, but he may not be going far.

Coughlin, 27, was a seventh-round pick (218th overall) by the Giants out of Minnesota in the 2020 NFL draft. He played in 55 games over his four seasons in blue with two starts.

Coughlin was predominately used on special teams and played more snaps there last season (397) than any other Giant.

Coughlin did not leave the Giants’ facility after the move, indicating he’s likely headed to the practice squad, reports USA TODAY’s Art Stapleton .

Following Carter’s release, the Giants have one open spot on their 53-man roster. They will also have one player too many on their practice squad, indicating another transaction is forthcoming.

In addition to Carter’s release, the Giants also reached injury settlements with wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie and offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste.
