QB Conner Weigman has ‘responded how’ Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko ‘would have expected’

Texas A&M junior quarterback Conner Weigman had a rough return from injury during a season-opening loss this past weekend at home against Notre Dame .

Aggies head coach Mike Elko , offensive coordinator Collin Klein and Weigman grinded some tape after the game to find out what went wrong. According to Elko, the mistakes began at the ground level.

“As it regards to Conner, the thing we just talked to him about, it looked like his feet just never got settled. Maybe some of the past residue kinda showcased itself in his first time back. He had much cleaner pockets than I think he played like. I think his feet just got out of control underneath him a little bit. I think that caused a lot of his inaccuracies,” Elko said Monday. “I think when you watched him settle his feet at different times, it didn’t happen a lot, but when it did happen, he was able to deliver the ball the way that he is capable of. On the interception that he threw to Noah, probably one of the most noticeable examples, his feet were just kind of all over the place.

“So he knows it, he saw it, he’s confident in the corrections he needs to make and he’ll have a great week of practice to put himself in position to make the improvements that we need to make. It certainly isn’t all on him by any stretch of the imagination. We still gotta do a better job throughout the game of keeping pressure off of him. We still gotta do a better job throughout the game of creating separation and running routes.

“We’ve gotta get the passing game on track, we know that.”

Two days later during his weekly SEC teleconference , Elko shared that Weigman “has responded how I would have expected him to.”

“He went back to work and had a good week,” Elko explained. “We’re all confident that he’ll go out and do that moving forward.”
