Penn State falls in updated Super 16 poll from football writers

With Michigan and Notre Dame each losing this weekend, there were bound to be some big changes in this week’s rankings. While awaiting the release of the latest national polls, the Super 16 Poll from the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation was updated to reflect the results of Week 2 around the college football world.

Michigan managed to stay within the top 16 teams of this week’s Super 16 Poll after getting run over at home by Texas . The Longhorns picked up some first-place votes and moved one spot ahead of Ohio State this week as a result. But Georgia continues to outpace everybody in the Super 16 poll with 44 first-place votes this week.

Penn State was moved down one spot in favor of moving three teams up in the reworked poll. As Michigan and Notre Dame fell out of the top 10, Ole Miss moved up from no. 8 to no. 5, Miami jumped from no. 10 up to no. 6, and Tennessee moved from no. 14 up to no. 7. All three passed Penn State, which fell from no. 7 down to no. 8 this week.

Here is a look at the latest FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll following Week 2:

    1. Georgia – 849 points (44 1st-place votes)
    2. Texas – 801 (8)
    3. Ohio State – 770 (2)
    4. Alabama – 629
    5. Ole Miss – 600
    6. Miami – 480
    7. Tennessee – 468
    8. Penn State – 451
    9. USC – 436
    10. Oregon – 429
    11. Missouri – 398
    12. Utah – 323
    13. Oklahoma – 166
    14. Oklahoma State – 146
    15. Kansas State – 101
    16. Michigan – 61

In the interest of full disclosure, I am also a voter in this poll. One of the biggest differences between my ballot and the final voting is my ranking of Arizona, which actually falls ninth among others receiving votes in the overall voting this week. My ballot this week looked like this:

    1. Georgia
    2. Ohio State
    3. Texas
    4. Alabama
    5. Ole Miss
    6. USC
    7. Penn State
    8. Oregon
    9. Tennessee
    10. Missouri
    11. Miami
    12. Utah
    13. Oklahoma
    14. Oklahoma State
    15. Arizona
    16. Michigan
