MCALLEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The City of McAllen on Monday approved an $820,000 budget amendment to begin construction on a regional animal care facility for the Palm View Animal Society.

The city’s news release said the PVAS shelter helps stray, neglected, abused dogs and cats with housing.

“We are proud of the change in philosophy that the City of McAllen has developed in our approach to animal care services,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “This investment and responsibility in the care of stray, neglected, abused dogs and cats is one that the City of McAllen will bear alone if necessary, but we invite any of our neighboring communities to help us in the construction of a shelter that will benefit our area.”

According to the release, city officials are looking to construct the PVAS shelter at the current location in Edinburg.

Currently, that location is inadequate to house a large number of animals as it lacks covered, indoor kennels to keep dogs and cats out of the elements.

The next step includes a request for proposals from interested architecture firms.

Construction is expected to begin next year.
