EDINBURG, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — The Edinburg Police Department is launching a Dog Walker Watch Program this Friday.

The aim of the program is to harness the power of the community by enlisting pet owners as additional eyes and ears for law enforcement.

The logic is that with so many pet owners walking their dogs at various times of day, there will be more people on alert, ready to contact law enforcement when suspicious behavior is encountered.

A celebration for this program will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dog park, located at  Sgt. Jacob de La Garza North Park, 1059 Cullen Street.

“All pet owners are invited to attend and bring their furry friends for the Dog Watch Program Kickoff,” said Chief Jaime Ayala. “This event is not only an opportunity to introduce the community to the program but also to foster a stronger partnership between our police officers and residents.”

The event will feature various pet vendors, including groomers, veterinarians, and local animal shelters. Attendees can also look forward to complimentary pup cups, dog treats, dog toys, and more for their pets to enjoy.
