HARLINGEN, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Senior Adrian Chavez takes over the role of quarterback for Lyford after a big season on the outside in 2023.

Chavez played receiver for the Bulldogs last season, where he posted over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 15 TDs. He took over the QB role after Aidan Olivas graduated.

Chavez has big shoes to fill. Olivas accounted for over 3,200 all-purpose yards and 21 TDs for the Bulldogs’ offense.

Despite the high expectations, Adrian said he’s ready to lead this team this season. He said, “I’m really happy to lead this team. I think we’re gonna do a lot of great things. We have a lot of guys stepping up this year, and I believe in them. I know we’re gonna work hard, too.”

Junior center Aiden Rubalcaba is used to turnover at the quarterback position. He said, “I’ve had a different QB every year. I believe in Adrian. He’s a great athlete. He’s smart, so I think we’ll be good this year.”

Lyford finished the 2023 season with a 9-2 record, falling in the first round of the playoffs to Industrial.

A big game every season for the Bulldogs is the Cotton Bowl against Raymondville. This year, that game has even more meaning since realignment put the two programs in the same district (District 16-3A D-I).

Junior tight end Gael Silva said, “It has more meaning to it now. It’s going to be even tougher, a lot of people are going to be there, and we’re hyped.”

The Bulldogs left no doubt in last year’s Cotton Bowl, winning by 24 points (27-3).

Before Lyford gets to district play, it opens up its season against Port Isabel on Friday, Aug. 30.
