BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — It’s a plan more than 15 years in the making. On Wednesday the Gladys Porter Zoo gave the community details on what is to come.

The city of Brownsville has agreed to buy Cummings Middle School from Brownsville ISD and use it to expand the zoo.

This will allow the zoo to grow and keep its accreditation.

Cummings Middle School is home to the district’s Career and Technology Program. This deal also means CTE students will soon have a new campus to call home.

“Let me assure our students and our parents that we’re going to continue to use Cummings and we will not make any movement until a new facility is built. In the contract that we negotiated with the city, they have guaranteed us that we can stay there for a minimum of five years, more time, if necessary,” said Jesus Chavez, Brownsville ISD Superintendent.

The new $60 million facility for the district’s CTE program is expected to be completed in about three-and-a-half years.
