Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show is a great way to give back to Iowans
IARN – As the Iowa State Fair kicks off this morning in Des Moines, we look forward to all the ways we celebrate the agriculture industry in this state. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Beef Industry Council embody the “Cattlemen Care” mantra. It’s a way that the producers do what they can for their friends, neighbors, and fellow Iowans.
Area Boys Named All State
Some area boys were named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s All State Teams. In Class 2A Thomas Steele of Columbus made 2nd Team. In Class 1A Landon Frost of Don Bosco made 1st Team and Jake Schoer and Tucker Ladeburg of Wapsie Valley made 2nd Team.
Five Iowa small businesses receive state grants from Main Street Iowa pitch competition
Five small businesses from Main Street Iowa districts shared $50,000 in state grants after pitching their expansion ideas to a panel of judges in the final round of Main Street Iowa’s Open 4 Business contest. Burlington’s Thyme & Spice Co., owned by Travis and Ashlyn Long, won the top prize – a $20,000 grant to expand their modern version of a spice and tea shop. They plan to use the money to introduce a refill program for their line of olive oils and vinegars. The four other finalists were:

Area County Fair Queens Competing for Iowa State Fair Queen Crown
The 2024 Iowa State Fair Queen will be crowned this Saturday (08.10) night in Des Moines. Floyd County Fair Queen Jada Litterer says her mom encouraged to strive to become State Fair Queen, while last year’s Floyd County Fair Queen, Josette Benning, advised her that if she wants it, she’ll have to prove it.
Iowa State Fair vendor creates award-winning dish in memory of her late parents
DES MOINES, Iowa — Almost three decades after a tragedy, the owner of Jada’s Concessions at the Iowa State Fair is getting some much deserved recognition. At the 1996 Iowa State Fair, Jada Smith’s parents, Bobbie and Marilyn Blewer, were murdered by a hitman hired by their oldest daughter, Jamie Borushaski. Jamie, her husband Rodney Borushaski and the hitman Jerimy Sneed are all serving life sentences in prison.
Catching up with House District 53 hopeful, Tommy Hexter
GRINNELL – Raised a Catholic in central Virginia while living on an egg and vegetable farm has shaped House District 53 Democratic candidate Tommy Hexter into the person he is today. Raised much like an Iowan, Hexter did plenty of farm chores and attended parochial school as a youngster, eventually making his way to Grinnell College in 2017, the same school his mother graduated from in 1985. After graduating both Hexter and his family made Iowa their full time home and settled down.

Prairie football brings in new staff, including former Kennedy coach Don Knock
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Prairie head coach Kyle Knock lead his Hawks through workouts, alongside familiar names Mo Blue and Don Knock. Blue - now the Hawks’ defensive coordinator - was the head coach at Wash for six years before stepping down. He’s been coaching in the metro for over two decades.
