Krist Novoselic has been getting back to his Nirvana roots this summer. On Thursday (July 18), the band's former bassist surprised fans at Georgie’s Garage in Vancouver, Washington who were there to see a Foo Fighters /Nirvana tribute band FooVana perform. Novoselic came out to assist FooVana with “Blew,” “Lithium,” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” As Consequence points out , this marked the first time the Nirvana bassist played “Blew” live in more than three decades.
FooVana actually alerted fans that Novoselic would be performing with them before the show. “Get down here to Georgie’s Garage and Grill! Show’s about to start!" They captioned a photo of the bassist warming up with them on Facebook. Oh yeah that’s right… Somebody else is here!!!”
The surprise appearance comes after Novoselic and his group The Bona Fide Band covered Nirvana's first single "Love Buzz" in Kurt Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen, Washington last month. Watch fan-shot footage of Novoselic and FooVana playing "Blew" below.
Last year, Novoselic predicted what he thought the future of Nirvana would've been if Cobain hadn't died. “I don’t know. We recorded our last song together ‘You Know You’re Right’, and that was Nirvana,” he said. “It had our whole thing as a jam then a crescendo that builds to come back down with a big chorus. It’s a really hard one to answer. Dave [Grohl] went on to do Foo Fighters , he’s successful and carrying the torch. I’ve got another band called Third Secret with Matt [Cameron] and Kim [Thayil] from Soundgarden – we’re kind of like the grunge ABBA ."
“If only Kurt would have hung in there, then we would have known," Novoselic lamented. "Just to have him in the world would make a huge difference, and that’s all that really matters. I miss the guy, so I can only dream.”
