WYNNE — Monday was a bit of a historic day for the recovery effort in Wynne following the March 31, 2023 tornado. Wynne Mayor Jennifer Hobbs and other city leaders attended a “Welcome Home” ceremony for the first of several houses being built through a program spearheaded by the Wynne Church of Christ.
Wynne native honored for role in Hawaii wildfire recovery efforts
MEMPHIS, Tennessee — A Wynne native has been recognized for his contributions to the recovery efforts in Hawaii following the wildfires there in August 2023. Johnny Ratliff is a Wynne High School graduate and Construction Control Representative for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Memphis District. He was recently presented with a certificate of appreciation by members of the Hawaii Wildfires Recovery Field Office.
Vanndale-Birdeye Water Association warns of potential rate increase following state-mandated study
CHERRY VALLEY — The Vanndale-Birdeye Water Association has informed customers that their rates may soon increase based on an ongoing rate study. The utility said Act 605 of 2021 requires all water companies to have a water rate study performed every five years. The Arkansas Rural Water Association is currently conducting such a study for Vanndale-Birdeye Water.

Cross County Elementary welcomes new kindergarten teachers for 2024-2025 school year
CHERRY VALLEY — Cross County Elementary School has welcomed two new kindergarten teachers ahead of the 2024-2025 school year. Molly Batson is a graduate of Murphysboro High School in Murphysboro, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Education degree this past May from Arkansas State University. She lives in Cherry Valley with coach Connor Haag and their one-year-old son.
Wynne Parks & Rec to introduce flag football with registration starting this week
WYNNE — The first effort to add flag football to the Wynne Parks & Rec department will be this week. “It’s something that’s been asked about quite a bit especially as of recently. … We’re starting to get more and more people travel out of the city to put their kids into flag football leagues in the fall,” said Zach Morris, director of the Wynne Parks & Rec department. “We’re just exploring what our options are. I think what we’ll do is we’ll have two registration dates in person and it will be for kids going into kindergarten and first grade in the first division. The second division will be for kids going into second and third grade.”
Cross County Library to host Harry Potter birthday celebration with magical events this week
WYNNE — The Cross County Library is celebrating Harry Potter’s birthday with two events this week. The titular literary character was born on July 31, 1980. The library will host a program on Hogwarts House Sorting and DIY Wizard Wands at 2 p.m. tomorrow, July 30. That will be followed by a showing of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” the first movie in the series at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.
