Adam Driver to Star in Kenneth Lonergan’s Play ‘Hold on to Me Darling’ Off Broadway

Adam Driver will lead the off-Broadway revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s play “Hold on to Me Darling.”

The show will run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre for a limited 13-week engagement. Preview performances will begin on Sept. 24 ahead of opening night on Oct. 16. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

“Hold on to Me Darling” follows a country music icon named Strings McCrane (Driver), who finds himself in an existential tailspin on learning of his mother’s death. He decides the only way out is to abandon his superstardom in favor of the simple life, so he moves back to his hometown in Tennessee. According to a press release, “the simple life turns out to be anything but simple in this brilliantly observed tragicomedy, as the consequences of Strings’ success and mind-bending effects of his fame prove all but impossible to outrun.”

Timothy Olyphant originally starred as Strings McCrane in “Hold on to Me Darling” when the play opened off-Broadway in 2016. A New York Times review by Ben Brantley called that production “a poignant comic study of the bad faith and bad behavior of a narcissistic celebrity and those around him.” Brantley added that Lonergan is “a writer with one of the best ears around for the language of the morally challenged — a term that I would say applies to most of the human race.”

Lonergan is the Tony-winning playwright of “This Is Our Youth,” “Lobby Hero” and “The Waverly Gallery.” He also won an original screenplay Oscar for “Manchester by the Sea,” a drama starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams.

The creative team for “Hold on to Me Darling” will include Walt Spangler (scenic design), Suttirat Larlarb (costume design), Tyler Micoleau (lighting design), and David Van Tiegham (sound design). Casting is by Telsey Casting, with Wagner Johnson Productions serving as general manager.
