There's still time to enter a few city council and other races

    By Staff reports,

There's still time — though not much — to run for some local city council seats and other races in the Nov. 5 General Election.

Filing deadlines for nominees have been extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday for council and other seats where incumbents have chosen not to seek reelection. In addition to council races, the extension applies to some school board and special district positions.

A list posted by the Ventura County Elections Division Friday showed the deadline extended for these city council races:

    • Moorpark : The District 2 seat of Daniel Groff.
    • Ojai : The mayor's seat now served by Betsy Stix and the District 4 seat of Suza Francina. The deadline has also been extended for the city clerk's position held by Cynthia Burell.
    • Oxnard : The mayor's seat held by John Zaragoza and the District 4 council seat served by Bryan MacDonald, who is running for mayor.
    • Port Hueneme : One seat on the at-large council held by Bobby Martinez.
    • Ventura: The District 3 council member seat now served by Mike Johnson and the District 7 seat held by Joe Schroeder. Schroeder currently serves as mayor, a position that rotates among the council members.

The list of extended deadlines also includes several school districts, water districts and other special districts. You can find all of the positions under the " extension of nomination period" link at venturavote.org.

For city offices, candidates need to obtain and file nomination documents with the city clerk.

Candidates for school districts and special districts must get nomination paperwork from the elections division, located on the lower floor of the county's Hall of Administration at 800 S. Victoria Ave. in Ventura.

For more information, contact the elections division at 805-654-2664, at elections@ventura.org or go to venturavote.org .
