Moorestown, New Jersey, is buzzing with excitement this August, all thanks to 17-year-old Rebecca Liu, a high school senior with a passion for sustainability. Plant Based for the Planet, the initiative she brought to Moorestown, has inspired the town to embrace plant-based eating in a big way.

Mayor Declares “Plant Based for the Planet Month”

Liu's efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Mayor Nicole Gillespie officially proclaimed August as “Plant Based for the Planet Month,” marking the town’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by increasing access to plant-based foods. With Liu leading the charge, local restaurants have jumped on board, offering plant-based specials throughout the month.

A Community United for Change

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Liu shared, "I wanted to create something that everyone in Moorestown could be part of, whether they’re plant-based or not. It’s about making a collective impact. Seeing the community come together and support these restaurants has been incredibly rewarding. We’re showing that even small actions can lead to big changes for our health and the environment."

Plant-Based Powerhouse

Liu's work is part of a larger effort by Planted Society to promote climate-friendly eating. Her leadership has shown that individuals and local businesses can drive meaningful change. Sue Mammarella, a Moorestown Councilmember, echoed this sentiment, stating, "The message is simple: Eat More Plants. It is better for the health of our town, our planet, and ourselves. As a plant-based eater myself, I am excited to participate in this important sustainability initiative. I urge all of our residents and visitors to do the same and encourage our local restaurants to always include wholesome and delicious plant-based options on the menu."
