North Port bus driver dies in crash

OSPREY — A North Port man who was driving a school bus in Osprey died after experiencing a medical event and then crashing Friday morning in a Publix parking lot.

Security footage shows the bus traveling in a parking lot, moving fast, hitting two parked, unoccupied vehicles and hitting another with a man inside who was not hurt.

There were no students on the bus.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported the 59-year-old bus driver swerved onto the grassy shoulder before entering the parking lot at U.S. 41 and Blackburn Point Road.

He was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died. His name was not released by the FHP.
