The Vermont Downtown Development Board recently awarded 11 downtowns and villages $1.8 million in Downtown Transportation Fund grants to support projects to improve safety, access, and transportation.

“Vermont communities are working tirelessly to ensure our roads serve all modes of transportation,” Alex Farrell, Department of Housing and Community Development commissioner and Downtown Board chairman, said. “By prioritizing pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit, we are creating safer, more inclusive, and sustainable environments for everyone. This joint investment by the Vermont Agency of Transportation and the Agency of Commerce and Community Development reflects our shared and ongoing commitment to improving quality of life and fostering vibrant, connected communities.”

Farrell said the investments will enhance communities, support businesses, and draw people downtown.

The town of Chester received $200,000 to improve pedestrian and bicycle access to and around the village and improve safety. The project includes curb repairs, crosswalks, helping delineate pedestrian boundaries in front of shops, and electrifying the Green.

Other awardees receiving $200,000: the Town of Bennington, the Town of Springfield, the Town of St Johnsbury, the Town of Williston, and the Town of Windsor.

Additional awardees include the City of Vergennes, $199,200; the Town of Brattleboro, $114,289; the Town of Danville, $100,000; the Town of Rockingham (Bellows Falls), 96,000; and the Town of Brighton, $78,500.
