VERONA, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Young people, who are interested in soil science, can sign up now for a June 21 event that explores many aspects of this topic.

Mississippi State University (MSU) will host its first-ever Youth Soil Science Field Day at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona. The half-day event is designed for students ages 8-12.

“This is a brand-new statewide program geared toward youth with an interest in science and growing things,” said Amee Bumguardner, MSU assistant professor of agronomy. “We have designed activities and sessions to introduce them to various aspects of soil science that they may not have been introduced to so far in school.”

Students who participate will have the chance to interact with MSU scientists as they learn how the soil provides nutrients to plants, how soil is formed and how livestock impact the soil.

There is no charge to attend this event. Attendees can register by June 19.

The field day begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m. Parents and caregivers are welcome to stay with their children or pick them up when the event has ended.

The North Mississippi Research and Extension Center is located at 5421 Highway 145 South in Verona.
