DANE COUNTY, Wis. -- The Dane County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday deputies have responded to two head-on crashes in recent days, both of which left motorists with potentially life-threatening injuries.

On July 23, the DCSO said deputies responded to the first crash in Rutland, where a vehicle crossed the center line and hit another motorist head-on. Both drivers sustained serious injuries and had to be freed from their vehicles. US Highway 14 was closed for two hours while deputies processed the scene. Impaired driving is a possible cause, but the crash remains under investigation.

The DCSO said a second head-on collision occurred on July 24, in Verona, where a total of three people were injured and transported to local hospitals. A charge of operating while intoxicated, second offense, is pending against a Madison man who remains hospitalized.
