The 42-year-old announced his engagement to girlfriend Melli Monaco on Instagram, detailing his Parisian proposal. Sharing a selfie uploaded to Instagram as a video on Tuesday (July 30), the media personality explained how he did not wait for an answer from his partner.
“The Eiffel Tower is Where it happened, She said nothing,” confessed the three-time NBA All-Star . “i guess i was so nervous, i asked and answered (collision emoji) yes (collision emoji) for her (three woozy face emojis) so im technically engaged to myself at the moment (grimacing face emoji) @mellimonaco still waiting (prayer hands emoji).”
His story was affirmed by Monaco in the comments. She wrote, “This man went down on one knee and said all in the same breath ‘will you marry me yes’,” adding “I don’t think an answer was needed,” after a tears of joy emoji.
Still, the next day, the influencer shared her own post, spending time in a pool with Arenas with the caption “YES!”
According to Essentially Sports, Monaco is a 34-year-old YouTuber and musician who runs four channels on the platform, gaining a following after her song “War” was released. Last year, she and Arenas collaborated on a video, where they played a one-on-one basketball game and he reportedly asked her out during a livestream.
While a celebratory affair, the engagement also drew comments from fans with jokes on the authenticity of the ring due to Arenas’ past relationship history. According to Atlanta Black Star, the former Memphis Grizzlies point guard admitted to giving ex-fiancée, Laura Govan, a fake engagement ring.
The former couple dated from 2002 through 2014 and share four children, with him proposing in 2008. Their happily ever after did not last, however, and Arenas admitted to swapping the luxury diamond ring out for a fake following a 2011 breakup.
“When u have a million dollar ring made you also have a fake one made JUST incase sh*t doesn’t workout…lets say s—t didn’t workout and she has the fake one…no need to forcefully take a ring back if its been sitting in a safe this whole time smdh..Why sell it when I can pass it down to my kids,” revealed Arenas in a now-deleted Instagram post.
