Pitbull Purchases Naming Rights To FIU’s Football Stadium, Renames It Pitbull Stadium

Pitbull has represented Miami to the fullest throughout his career and he recently made a business move to strengthen his connection to the city. The 43-year-old star purchased the naming rights to Florida International University’s football stadium.

On Tuesday (Aug. 6), the FIU Board of Trustees approved a five-year deal to change FIU Stadium’s name to Pitbull Stadium. He will pay the university $1.2 million per year as part of the historic deal , marking the first time a university’s sporting facilities were named after a musician.

The deal entails him making an anthem for FIU, posting about the school 12 times per year via social media, and appearing at one athletic fundraising event per year. This will allow him to use the stadium 10 times per year, give him two reserved suites for all home games, and his liquor brand will be a highlighted product sold throughout the stadium.

“For me, what it boils down to is, Miami is always known for being underdogs, no matter what we do and what level we take it to,” Pitbull said in a statement. “Being underdogs is what I always felt about FIU — fighting, clawing their way to just be seen, to be recognized whether it be from education, business, through sports.” The “Give Me Everything” artist said that he knew no one would believe in this bold idea and quoted Trick Daddy’s classic 2001 record, saying he had to “take it to the house.”

The Grammy winner continually harped on how historic this move was. “What we’re doing here is groundbreaking,” he said. “We’re making history. This is history in the making. You’re going to see that every other university is going to want to do the same thing. But the difference is, we don’t do this for propaganda, we do it from the heart. We do it because it’s meaningful. We do it because I’m from the crib. I’m 305. I’m from the bottom. This is my backyard.”

Pitbull’s positive disposition could be a catalyst for change for Florida International University’s football team. They have been struggling over the years as they haven’t had a winning season since 2018, and had a 4-8 record the last two years. Their first game under the new stadium name, Pitbull Stadium, will be Sept. 7 against Central Michigan.
