Gabby Thomas came in first place in the women’s 200m race on Tuesday (Aug. 6), bringing home the gold for Team USA. The medal is her first Olympic trophy, according to NBC News , as the track and field athlete finished with a time of 21.83.
St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred earned second place, adding the silver medal to her growing collection. On Sunday (Aug. 4), Alfred brought her country its first medal, winning gold in the women’s 100m dash. Brittany Brown also on Team USA rounded out the 200m podium for third.
“You prepare for this moment and train so hard for this moment, but when it actually comes, it’s indescribable,” Thomas explained, per NBC. “I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams that I would become an Olympic gold medalist, and I am one. I’m still wrapping my head around that.”
The track and field competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics has brought many firsts beyond both Thomas and Alfred. Last week, Thea LaFond set a record of 15.02 meters in the triple jump, winning the Caribbean country Dominica’s first-ever gold medal, and first medal period.
“They deserve this as much as I do,” LaFond detailed according to The Washington Post. “And I hope they are partying enough for the both of us. I don’t know what I’ve done in life to deserve this. I don’t know how everything worked out — I’m not going to say I don’t know. We worked for this.”
The 2024 Paris Olympics continues through next weekend with a closing date of Aug. 11. As of Wednesday morning, Team USA counts 88 total medals with 24 gold, 32 silver, and 32 bronze, leading the scoreboard against the other represented countries.
Notable wins include Sha’Carri Richardson earning the silver medal in the 100-meter final, Simone Biles’ multiple record-breaking medals, Melissa Jefferson winning bronze in the 100-meter race, and Noah Lyles taking gold in the men’s 100-meter dash by 0.005 seconds.
