Snoop Dogg Introduces Breakdancing At 2024 Paris Olympics

Breakdancing is officially a part of the world’s games , and Snoop helped introduce the first-ever event. On Friday (Aug. 9), Snoop opened the competition at Paris’ Place de la Concorde, with a legendary grand entrance.

The West Coast icon swagged his way to the dancefloor, sporting a USA tracksuit and a pair of customized Converse Chuck Taylors tagged with graffiti. Snoop and The Neptune’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” blared over the arena’s sound system, which immediately caused the Doggfather to hit a calm little two-step. He then signaled the beginning of the event with a slight thumping of the coup de baton, a wooden baton used to announce an event’s commencement.

As for the competition itself, the contestants were full of dancers from all over the globe with the women’s semifinals coming down to a decisive battle. The face-off between Ami Yuasa of Japanand the Lithuanian B-Girl, Dominika Banevič, was rather one-sided, with Yuasa taking all three rounds and winning the gold medal match.

Now, onto the elephant in the room. Yes, two Americans were competing in the women’s inaugural breakdancing event—none of them were Black. Logan Edra, also known as Logistx, and Grace Sun Choi, aka B-Girl Sunny, repped the USA, but the ladies who are cultural descendants of the people who founded the culture weren’t present. Interesting.

But that sour taste in your mouth may be fixed tomorrow as the men take centerstage for their breaking competition. There happens to be one Black American, Houston native Jeffrey Louis, competing on Saturday (Aug. 10). Louis is set to face Gaëtan Rodrigue Alin in the preliminary phase, which starts at 10:23 AM EST in Group C play.
