Jordan Chiles Olympic Appeal Denied, Must Return Bronze Medal

Jordan Chiles, the Team USA Olympic bronze medalist who won in Paris for the floor exercise is being asked to surrender her title.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee released a statement on Sunday showing support for the champion. “We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed.”

The Court of Arbitration for Sport voided an appeal made by Chiles’ team in reference to her performance. The appeal came four seconds beyond the one-minute time limit for scoring inquiries.

Chiles’ sister Jazmine has been addressing racist comments in lengthy Instagram stories over the weekend. “Please keep Jordan (and my family) in your prayers,” she wrote. “Racism is real, it exists, it is alive and well.”

No one has been stripped of their title for the reasons the court is citing, according to Jazmine—though she does not think race is at play. The racist comments she’s received under comments she’s made on her stories.

“Funny thing is yall think i’m pulling the race card as a reason to WHY she got her medal stripped . NO ?? I’m saying that because y’all’s?? mouths ?? need SOAP?? ?,” Jazmin wrote.

Per the NY Post , “With Simone Biles winning silver and Brazilian Rebecca Andrade winning gold, removing Chiles from the podium prevented it from being the first all-black Olympic gymnastics podium in history.”

Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu is taking her place as the new bronze medalist and Chiles has been moved to the fifth position.
