A medley of motherhood: Celebrating different kinds of moms on Mother’s Day

An ode to Mother’s Day:

There are all kinds of mothers.

There are mothers who are tall and those that are short.

There are old moms and young moms, round moms, and skinny ones.

There are moms that have short hair or moms who wear a long style. And there are moms who have hair color found on the drugstore aisle.

There are stepmoms, soccer moms, and dance moms, too. There are even cat moms and dog moms — some with Shih Tzus.

And while each one is different, there is one common insight.

They all have a distinct goodness, like described on a website.

In honor of Mother’s Day, The Vicksburg Post took this little limerick to heart and reached out to moms reflective of the medley of motherhood and here is what they said about being a mom.

Nalini LaTorre on being a mother

“Being a mother has been an amazing experience and I cannot imagine my life any other way,” Nalini said. “It has been one of the best things in my life, most definitely.” In describing motherhood, Nalini also referenced a saying she had heard about motherhood. “There is a saying about being a mother — ‘it’s like having your heart away from you in a different place walking around,’” she said. And with Nalini’s daughter, Alana, away at college, this would

certainly hold true. Nalini went on to say that while she loved her time with Alana before she left for college, she still plans to stay close. “I have been able to enjoy my daughter, and I plan to enjoy her as much as I can.”

Cari Wansley on being a twin mom and soccer mom

“I love being a twin mom,” Cari said. “I have a boy and a girl, (Mason and Bryleigh) they are 11 and I don’t really know what it would be like without twins, but I just know that my life is extremely busy.” Cari also has a 5-year-old son, Louis, who is autistic. In addition to keeping up with three children, Cari also spends a lot of time on the soccer field. “My daughter does

competition soccer,” she said. “And she also plays softball and basketball. So, I’m a sports mom for sure.” Cari also goes the extra mile in helping with the team, she said. “I am the team manager, because I like being there for all of the kids. We kind of treat them all like family since we have been together for like five years.”

Tammy Boolos on being a new grandmom

How do you describe what it’s like when the first grandchild is born? You really can’t, Tammy said. “It’s just hard to put into words.” Tammy said friends warned her of how a grandchild would “rock her world,” but “You really can’t explain it until you experience it,” she said. “It’s just the sweetest little love you can’t explain.” Tammy’s grandson, William, was born on April 24, 2024.

Regina Smith on being a cat mom

“It’s wonderful being a cat mom,” Regina said. “She is lovable, and she follows you around everywhere.” Annabelle was a rescue kitty Regina said. “I found her when she was a baby. She was in the middle of Queen’s Street just a meowing,” she said. Annabelle has been with Regina, for nearly 17 years and during that time has become “spoilt,” Regina said.

Kaylae Hunter on being a mom of four young children

Kaylae said she loved being a mom of four children. “There’s just so much to love. I mean it’s hectic and it can get wild, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” she said. Seeing her four children, Savannah, Michael Jr. Sarah Kate and Maon who are 7, 6, 3 and 1, respectively, interact with each other is another bright spot in being a mom of four. “I love their closeness, their laughter together, and when they hug each other and say, ‘I love you so much,’ or ‘Your my best friend,’ it just makes my whole day,” she said. Kaylae said summer was her favorite time of the year since it allowed for more family time. “We love summer and vacation — just getting to be together without having to go to school. We can relax and have fun together and not have a set schedule.”

Catherine Hadaway on being a new mom

With nine months of anticipation, it’s hard for a first-time mom to sense what life will be like with a little one in the home. Catherine said after Boone was born having a new baby was “more fun” than she had expected. “Our house has also felt more like a home with him here with us,” she said. And with a new baby comes new experiences — those that kiss your heart and those that tug on the eyelids. Catherine said she has felt both. “I have experienced love, joy, gratitude and on an all-nigher or two, fatigue!” And like most first moms, the highlight of bringing home a new baby is experiencing all the changes. “After just eight short weeks, he has already changed so much – growing, smiling and making eye contact and cooing,” she said.

Melanie Nelson on being a baseball mom

“One of the greatest things I love about being a baseball mom is that it allows me to be free. Free to laugh, free to wear a hat, ponytail, or flip flops. Just free to be me,” Melanie said. “Baseball is such an exciting and often times thrilling game, especially when my son (Ryan) is on the field. Of course, it is known to be a game of failure, but it’s those times that the exciting plays or hits can make any child feel like a conqueror and illuminate their self-confidence.” Melanie said being a baseball mom has also allowed her to see her son grow. “I appreciate the aspects of patience and self-trust that the game of baseball has contributed to the character-building of our son. And there is no doubt that I am overjoyed and elated when I see my son’s hard work, dedication and commitment manifested on the field. He absolutely loves the game and works hard to be better than his last performance.”  Ryan is a graduating senior from Warren Central High School and Melanie said she will miss high school and travel ball. However, she will have the opportunity to continue watching Ryan play since he has received a scholarship to play at the next level. “He will continue his baseball career at East Central Community College and study Pre-Law,” she said.

Kelly Andrews on being a dog mom

“It’s wonderful being a dog mom. They are always happy, and they’re easy,” Kelly said. “They give you unconditional love and they are always in a good mood. They are never mad unless of course they are ill and that’s sad. I don’t like it when they are ill.” Kelly went on to say her dogs were always at her side. “They were my shadows, everywhere I went — I mean everywhere — you couldn’t take a bath without them,” she said laughingly. And when she would return home after being away for a few days, Kelly said her dogs let her know she had been missed. “They made me feel so special, like I’m their hero and the most wonderful thing in the world.”

Carolyn Burton on being a stepmom

“I enjoy everything about it (being a stepmom)” Carloyn said. “They (Gavin and Taylor) are just the best little people. It is amazing to have a small person come into your life that you didn’t give birth to that just fills up your whole entire heart,” she said. “It is the strangest and best thing that ever happened to me. I never anticipated that I would have children and to be gifted a whole family, it’s just been the coolest thing in life.” Carolyn went on to say it had also been an “incredible experience to share children with their other parents and stepparents.”

Chesley Lambiotte on being a dance mom

“Being a dance mom is not only supporting your child’s dreams mentally, physically, and financially,” Chelsey said. “But also understanding that dance is much more than a hobby. It’s a journey in passion and artistry.” And when her daughter performs, Chesley said her heart soars. “Watching Luella express herself onstage knowing she has put her heart and soul into her craft is so special to me — knowing her hard work and determination has led to her confidence on stage and in life is everything.”

Mallory Hoffman on being a new mom

“You always hear about being a mom, but feeling it firsthand is life changing,” Mallory said. Life changing and lifestyle changing — being a new mom means new experiences and for Mallory, she said that while others were kind enough to share their maternal practices, she decided to set her own path. “I didn’t set many expectations because I felt like every baby is different and people have different parenting styles, so I didn’t want to take other people’s experiences and expect it to be my own,” she said. “Growing and learning together as it comes has been what works best for us.” So far, Mallory said her favorite part of motherhood has been “watching the sweetest baby grow and learn new things. He has recently started giggling and laughing and it makes my day every time,” she said.

Jennifer Tillotson on being a boy mom

“Being a boy mom is special,” Jennifer said. “Boys love and take care of their mom. My boys really love to cook, so I really enjoy when they say, ‘Mom, we got this, you just relax.’” Jennifer said the best thing about being a boy mom has been seeing them grow and mature. “I think the best thing about being a boy mom is watching my boys (Zac, Caleb, Alex and Jesse) grow into young men and become dads themselves,” she said.
