VICTORIA, Texas - To ensure a safe and enjoyable Independence Day, it is crucial to follow firework safety guidelines.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 9,700 firework-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments in 2023.

Of those injuries, 35% were hand and finger injuries, while 19% were eye injuries, according to the CPSC.

Here are some safety tips from the City of Bay City's fire marshal, Daniel Shook:

    • Keep a good water source nearby to use in case of a fire
    • Soak dud fireworks in water and point it away from any person or structure when discarding
    • Drown used fireworks with water before discarding them
    • Use goggles when lighting a firework
    • Always call 9-1-1 for any injury or fire.

"You need to go to the ER and receive treatment for the injury. You also need to have the fire department respond to any fire, no matter how small you think it is," said Shook. "A fire doubles in size every minute and can get out of hand quickly."

Make sure to follow each city's laws and burn bans before deciding to participate in popping fireworks.

"Just because fireworks are sold does not mean they are legal to possess," said Shook.

Fireworks are illegal to possess within the City Limits of the City of Victoria by local city ordinance.

Victoria County is not currently under a burn ban.

Shook also advises being mindful of those who live near you.

"Animals and small children are sensitive to the loud noises produced by fireworks," said Shook. "Remember that you may not work the next day, but your neighbor might. Please be courteous to neighbors and animals."
