Piedmont Regional Jail staff went to the Virginia Association of Regional Jails Spring Conference and came back with some awards. The conference, held in Virginia Beach this year, helps guide employees of jail facilities build new skills, learn to better serve one another, and discusses ways to enhance the corrections setting. As a part of this conference, they host a ceremony that recognizes outstanding individuals who have gone above and beyond to serve their staff and community. Piedmont Regional Jail Authority had two staff members chosen for awards: Superintendent Jerry Townsend and Lieutenant Hernandez.

Townsend received the Superintendent of the Year Award. This award goes to superintendents who have worked tirelessly to provide better opportunities for offenders, their staff members, and the community. In Townsend’s 41 years of service, he has positively impacted and ensured the safety of many communities through his hard work, dedication, knowledge, and camaraderie. Lieutenant Hernandez was recognized for being Supervisor of the Year. This award goes to outstanding supervisors who go above and beyond to help serve their employees and support the community with their public service. Lieutenant Hernandez oversees the Transportation Department at Piedmont Regional Jail Authority, ensuring safety and coordination of all transportation needs. Staff members say Hernandez always has a smile on her face and maintains a positive attitude no matter what she is working on.
