‘Dash for Cash’ Community day at Mount Trashmore set to raise money for Virginia Beach Educators

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A FUNdraising community day is underway at Mount Trashmore.

Frogman’s Party Rentals presents the first annual “Dash for Cash” run series and community day.

Over 100 adults registered for the 5K run and about 20 kids registered for the “1 Mile Family Dash,” this morning.

The community day is from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., kids can enjoy access to inflatables with a donation of $10.

DJ Julian Rivera along with food trucks are part of the day of events:

8 a.m. – Dash for Cash 5k Run

10 a.m.  – 1 Mile Family Dash for Cash

Noon – VB kids fit workout session

1:30 p.m. – 12:15 p.m. Abbi Jean first performance

1 p.m.- Suffolk Skydive drop

2 p.m. – Virginia Beach Fire demonstration

2 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. – VB Kids workout session 2

2:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Abbi Jean second performance

3 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.- King Tiger Martial Arts demonstration

5 p.m. – Community Day ends

The event will help raise money for the Virginia Beach Education Foundation. Proceeds will directly benefit the teachers and students in Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

“We bring in community support, to raise money for students and teachers at a grassroots level, things that maybe the school division isn’t able to fund. Teachers can apply to us to get funding,” said Debbie Hughes, Virginia Beach Education Foundation Coordinator for VBCPS. “We want to make sure that the community knows we exist.”

The proceeds will help fund the Adopt A+ Grants .

“We do it on a blind review. It is a Google form for teachers with four questions, and we were giving up to $20,000 [for the School + Community Super] Grant. Last year, we gave over $230,000. We make it simple for teachers to do this… it could be [for] art, math, it could be history. It could be technology, it could be a collaboration of several things,” said Hughes. “It could be music theater, working with history. It could be STEM related, it could be anything.”

Michael Schwarting, the owner of Frogman’s Party Rentals, organized the event.

“My wife was a teacher [with] the Virginia Beach school system. [Rachel] was Superintendent’s pick two years ago and then she was Teacher of the Year this year,” said Schwarting. “Teachers all have the right heart. Often they’re spending their own money, they’re getting supplies for something that was missed out.”

The plan is to get more adults and kids to come out next year.

“We want to do it during the school year. I think it’ll be a little bit better, and maybe not as hot as it is today,” said Schwarting.
