Firefighters extinguish fully engulfed RV Wednesday morning
An RV is considered a total loss after it became fully engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office, at around 1:00 a.m. Greenwood and Tower fire departments responded to the intersection of County Road 77 and Lake Vermillion Reservation Road in rural Greenwood Township, just shortly west of Tower, Minnesota to the report of a Recreational Vehicle (RV) on fire.
Diver drowns attempting to recover sunken machinery in northern Minnesota
CRANE LAKE, Minn. — An investigation is underway after a 50-year-old man died early Sunday afternoon while scuba diving in a northern Minnesota lake.The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says the man had been assisting a group of people in recovering a piece of sunken machinery in approximately 70 feet of water at Crane Lake.The diver had failed to resurface after spending a "period of time" underwater, authorities say. Those on the scene began rescue efforts before first responders arrived to help.The man was pulled to the shore and pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office.Authorities say the man had been trained as a scuba diver but was not affiliated with any recovery or salvage company.The victim's name will be released at a later time.
Eveleth apartment house incurs fire, smoke damage
EVELETH—A vacant apartment house was damaged by smoke and fire in a Monday night blaze that was reported at 9:30 p.m., according to the Friends of the Northland FireWire. Crews from Eveleth, Fayal Township, Gilbert, Virginia, and Mountain Iron were dispatched to the 500 block of Adams Avenue, where heavy smoke was seen coming from the large structure. The Clinton, Lakeland, Biwabik Township and City of Biwabik departments were also paged. After extensive interior and exterior fire attacks, firefighters were able to keep the blaze contained to the interior of the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Eveleth Ambulance Service provided medical standby at the scene while the Eveleth Police Department and St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department assisted in traffic control.
Sheriff's office offers tips for boating
ST. LOUIS COUNTY—The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to use caution and courtesy when boating. “With the high-water levels, many shoreline property owners and businesses are experiencing damages to their properties due to flooding and erosion,” it states in a news release. “These high-water levels are also creating navigational hazards for boaters, as some docks are now floating and other debris has entered the water via flooding.” ...
