A person was killed while crossing a Visalia street Tuesday night, according to police.

Around 9 p.m., Visalia officers responded to Mooney Boulevard and Cameron Avenue for a vehicle versus pedestrian collision. The victim was crossing Mooney when they were struck by a southbound motorist with a green light, police said.

Initially, it was believed that the driver had fled the scene. However, it was later discovered that the driver had pulled into a nearby parking lot and called police to report the incident, police spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones said.

The pedestrian died at the scene, police said. The person's name and age haven't been released.

The department's Traffic Unit was called to the scene to begin an investigation.

The driver is "cooperating fully with law enforcement," Jones said. It doesn't appear that drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision, she added.

Anyone who has information about the collision is urged to call the Traffic Unit at 713-4175.
