SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 53-year-old man in law enforcement custody at the Vista Detention Facility died Monday while being treated at a hospital, authorities said.

Chase Mitchell, who was believed to be unsheltered at the time of his arrest, has been identified as the deceased, Lt. Scott Roller with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

On Sunday around 7:30 a.m., deputies noticed Mitchell experiencing medical distress as they conducted a safety check inside a housing module, according to authorities. He was taken to a hospital where he underwent a medical procedure the same day.

The following day, Mitchell continued to experience medical distress at the hospital and later died.

“The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office extends our sympathies to the Mitchell Family and those affected by his passing. A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they cope with their loss,” Roller said.

On June 13, the Oceanside Police Department took Mitchell into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The cause and manner of his death is still pending through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
