New Waco HS principal returns home to lead the Lions

WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) – There’s an old adage, “there’s no place like home,” which holds true for newly-named Waco High School Principal Joseph Alexander, who has served in the Waco Independent School District in a number of positions for over 20 years.

“I welcome the opportunity to return to my home district and lead the best campus in the state of Texas,” Alexander said.

The district says Alexander has more than 15 years of experience as a school administrator and has led multiple campuses in Waco ISD, including West Avenue Elementary School and Indian Spring Middle School. He served as the assistant principal of University High School for seven years.

“I’m extremely excited for the next chapter in my life and to return home to Waco ISD to be the new Waco High School principal. I look forward to meeting the scholars, staff, and the community members,” Alexander said. “I will establish a safe learning environment, a strong culture, and a climate of high expectations for social-emotional and academic success.”

The district says Alexander has a strong professional development background with a proven track record of increasing teacher capacity, conducting reflective dialogue with teachers through peer coaching, and implementing instructional strategies to improve student engagement. Alexander is credited with revitalizing Indian Spring Middle School by meeting academic standards and earning academic distinction for academic growth within a single school year after the school was labeled Improvement Required by the Texas Education Agency.

Alexander was recently employed in the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, where he performed advanced work supporting curriculum and instruction related to academic and behavioral interventions with a focus on trauma-informed practices.

Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Susan Kincannon said Alexander has the knowledge, experience and dedication to meet the needs of Waco High students.

“Mr. Alexander is an experienced administrator who knows the Waco High School community. He is familiar with our students and families and is excited about transitioning the school into its new facility in the fall of 2025,” Kincannon said. “I am confident in Mr. Alexander’s ability to implement systems that ensure a safe learning environment focused on academic achievement. We could not be more encouraged about the experience, dedication, and commitment that he brings to Waco High.”

The district says Alexander earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior College, plus a Master’s in Educational Administration from Tarleton University. He also holds a Superintendent Certification.

Alexander assumes his new role at Waco High School on Monday, July 22.
