Waco, TX ( FOX 44 ) – Waco Police Department spokesman Bryton Johnson has confirmed one person was killed in a boat crash during Sunday’s “Duel on the Brazos” drag boat event in Waco.

The police statement said a boat driven by a single driver “caught air” while racing at a speed estimated speed of 200 miles per hour. The statement said the boat began flipping and the driver was ejected. Medical teams recovered the driver from the water in less than a minute. The driver was unresponsive when found, and was later pronounced dead. An autopsy was not ordered.

The driver’s identity was not immediately released.

Waco Fire Department Executive Deputy Chief Robbie Bergerson said that while the department’s Water Rescue and Dive Team were not involved in standby duties at the boat races, an engine company was sent to assist ambulance personnel with patient care after the driver was removed from the water.
