The town of Wake Forest became one of twenty communities statewide to be accepted into AARP’s network of age-friendly communities during a Board of Commissioners meeting last week.

The designation speaks to a high level of comfort and livability afforded to senior citizens in Wake Forest, and commends the town for having created an environment where older residents have opportunities for recreation and involvement that are not found in other communities.

“We focus on things like transportation options, the ability to walk and exercise, the ability to socialize and engage with others, and how the town uses its open spaces to benefit people as a whole,” Steven Hahn, AARP’s state Director of Communications, said.

Hahn presented Mayor Vivian Jones with a certificate to celebrate the town’s inclusion into the network.

He keyed on the numerous ways that Wake Forest seeks to involve seniors. With a robust parks system, an active senior center, a variety of events and clubs, and a plethora of health services to stay healthy, Hahn said the award was well deserved.

“We’re so happy that you’ve adopted so many initiatives to help seniors thrive,” he said. “And the best part of it is that they don’t just benefit the old, they benefit the very old, they very young and everyone in between.”
