Wakefield Library to Host Local Children’s Author Kady Toole for Author’s Visit

A local children’s book writer is coming to the Wakefield Library for an author visit. 19-year-old Kady Toole of Washington County, Kan. first began writing during her sophomore year of high school as part of a school project. Toole said it quickly morphed into a project of its own leading her and her family to self-publish her first book, titled Izzy the Cowgirl Corgi.

RCFD#1 holds Ribbon Cutting for New Ashland Bottoms Volunteer Fire Station #102
RILEY CO., Kan. (WIBW) - The Riley County Fire District #1 unveiled a new volunteer fire station in southern Riley County Friday morning. The new Ashland Bottoms volunteer fire station in Manhattan was celebrated with a dedication ribbon-cutting ceremony. Construction began in February of this year and was paid for with existing fire district project funds. The new station is a major upgrade over the one it is replacing, which was built in the 1960s and was outdated.
Fire department wins Manhattan Battle of the Badges
The Manhattan Fire Department is the winner of the 21st Manhattan Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. The friendly, three-way competition pitted the Manhattan Fire Department Riley County EMS, and Riley County Police Department against each other to recruit the most blood donors. Donors at the Battle of the Badges cast a vote for their favorite first responders.
Clay Center’s Anita Breen Selected to Serve on Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities
Clay Center’s Anita Breen has been selected to serve as a member of the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities. A press release from the Kansas Office of the Governor said members of the Council are tasked with advocating for change to increase the productivity, independence, integration, and inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in Kansas communities. Breen said during her four-year-term she plans to address the lack of opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities after high school.
The Junction City Rodeo is this weekend
The 30th annual Junction City Rodeo is this Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena. The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. on both nights. The theme for Friday night is 'Tough Enough to Wear Pink' and Saturday night's theme is 'Red, White and Blue.'
Free Fair begins on Sunday
The Geary County Free Fair opens on Sunday. The location for the Free Fair is at 1025 South Spring Valley Road on the west side of Junction City. Sunday the 21st activities will kick off with the Pedal Pull at 5 p.m. and the 4-H Horse Show at 6 p.m.
Junction City says goodbye to Dinkel
Junction City said goodbye to its longtime city manager Allen Dinkel on Wednesday in a retirement reception at the Municipal Building in Junction City. Dinkel, who has served 35 years in local government and the last 10 in Junction City said he doesn’t have any concrete plans at this time during retirement, but he hopes to spend most of it with family.

JC Breakfast Optimist Club Learned About Harmony Fest
On July 17, JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s member/guest speaker was Martine Chery- Hilaire. Martine is originally from Haiti and has lived in Junction City for 15 years having been petitioned by her mother to be able to come to the United States. After five years, Martine joined the Army and ended up at Fort Riley. Martine owns and operates the Chez Matou Green Machine Food Truck located on North Washington Street in Junction City.
EPA Region 7 to present Flint Hills Regional Council with a check for a Brownfields Grant
On Friday, July 19, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will present a $1.5 million ceremonial check to the Flint Hills Regional Council .
