Newberry Elementary School loses 14 teachers
An unusually high number of teachers have transferred away from Newberry Elementary School (NES) as the school undergoes a controversial push to convert into a charter school. The school has had 14 teachers leave as transfers this year, according to Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) spokesperson Jackie Johnson. Two of those teachers had not begun working at NES yet but had been hired to begin in the fall and have already requested to transfer.
Three Lafayette High alumni join the Gatorettes
Three Lafayette High School (LHS) alumni joined the University of Florida (UF) Gatorettes and will be marching with the Gator Marching Band in the upcoming season. Logan Lents, Mia Braswell and Addison Byrd were majorettes with the LHS Marching Hornets, and all auditioned and made the Gatorettes, UF's majorettes team, for the 2024-25 season.
Senior Spotlight: Cooper Badics of Gainesville
From the gridiron to the pool, Class of 2024 Gainesville High grad Cooper Badics had a memorable senior year. Although he transferred from GHS to Trinity Catholic (Ocala) last fall to play football for the Celtics, he returned to the purple and white in the spring to play water polo and graduate with his fellow Hurricanes.
