Cedar Rapids woman charged with assault after spitting incident
A Cedar Rapids woman was arrested after an alleged reckless driving incident that ended with her spitting on a person who confronted her. The incident occurred at the Casey’s on Broadway Street on the afternoon of June 13th. 22-year-old Shalia Lewis of 12th Street NE was reportedly identified as the driver of a Chevy Tahoe with dealer plates, driving recklessly. Police say she moved in and out of traffic, passed vehicles on the shoulder and followed another vehicle to the convenience store.

City of Cedar Rapids asking for help reporting vandalism after damage to parks
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The city of Cedar Rapids says from May 21 to June 21 of this year, it’s seen more than $5,000 in damage from vandalism to local parks. That damage has taken more than 50 staff hours to repair, and the city says park restrooms may occasionally be closed while repairs continue. Now, the city is asking people to keep an eye out while visiting parks and report damage through MyCR at https://www.cedar-rapids.org/mycr/.

A North Liberty, Iowa, woman went to extreme lengths to get out of a date. Eighteen-year-old Sumaya Thomas was arrested after she called 911 and fabricated a story to avoid a date with a man she had met on a dating app. The two had planned a romantic evening, but when the man arrived at her doorstep on June 16, Thomas got cold feet and decided to call the police.

Iowa City man arrested after series of alleged domestic assaults. An Iowa City man was arrested over the weekend after a series of alleged domestic assaults. According to police documents, the first incident occurred December 22nd at the Super 8 hotel on First Avenue in Coralville. 34-year-old Olufemi Dehinbo of Shady Glen Court and his intimate partner had been living in the room together for over a month when the assault occurred. He had fled the scene before police arrived, and the victim reportedly had a hard time catching her breath because she had been screaming for hours. She had a bleeding bite mark on her finger, allegedly caused by Dehinbo.

(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- A jury has awarded what may be a state-record $35.7-million in damages to a woman injured in a crash with a semi. A tractor-trailer owned by Cedar Rapids-based Westside Transport, turned in front of 18 year-old Margaret McQuillen's car in the fog on Highway 151 outside Anamosa in 2020.
New Iowa law increases penalties for swatting, hoax callers
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — One of the manylaws going into effect Monday adds harsher penalties to swatting call charges, KCRG reports. Swatting is when somebody makes a hoax call to law enforcement to get a response. We’ve seen this happen at several schools and businesses here in Eastern Iowa over the last year, often resulting in dozens of police officers flocking to a scene when there is actually no danger.

Coralville motel guest accused of assaulting police after calling them himself
A guest at a Coralville motel is accused of assaulting police after he himself called them to check on his sick wife. According to arrest records, 48-year-old George Jackson of Westwinds Drive in Iowa City was staying at the MainStay Suites on Holiday Road when he called 9-1-1 at 1:30 Friday morning to report that his wife was very intoxicated and was vomiting. Arriving Coralville Police say Jackson refused to let them into the room to check on his wife’s welfare. Jackson allegedly shoved an officer out the door. He later reportedly elbowed the same officer in the head as police were trying to get Jackson’s pants up.
Suspect accused of stealing $2,000 bicycle from Coralville apartment building
Coralville Police say a suspect stole a $2,000 bicycle from an apartment building on the Iowa River Landing. 42-year-old Eric Kelley of 1st Avenue is accused of entering the nearby Banks apartments on East 7th Street at approximately 2:00 on the morning of May 16th, taking a bike that did not belong to him, and riding it out of the building. Investigators say the entire incident was captured on security video.
