    The tunnel under Highway 371 near the US Forest Service headquarters and city park is in place, and contractors only have a few days remaining to finish the project. Last week crews installed huge retaining walls.

    The tunnel, part of Phase V of the Shingobee Connection, will be used by cyclists and pedestrians, providing a safe, convenient crossing of the highway. It will connect to the bike trail, Community Center and WHA School.

    25 years ago...

    When Walker Lions were considering who to name as Grand Marshal of the July 4 parade, they quickly decided on retired elementary teacher Emma Isaacs.

    “The Lions have chosen to honor her for the lasting contributions she has made as an educator to the children and adults of this community and for her continued volunteer work,” Walker businessman and Lion Terry Holly said.

    During her years at WHA Elementary (she retired before the consolidation with Akeley) grade except second, including fourth-fifth and fifth-sixth combinations.

    50 years ago...

    The first Women’s Walker Cup Golf Tournament July 8-10 at Tianna Country Club.

    A special attraction will be the use of a 1974 Chevrolet for three months, given to the first entrant to hit a hole in one on Tuesday or Wednesday. The prize will be given, compliments of Bob Fleck Chevrolet, Chaska.

    Winner of the two-day competition will take possession of the Walker Cup for one year and will be awarded a smaller cup to keep. Registrations should be mailed to Mrs. John Lundrigan, Walker.
