WALL - A drunken driving checkpoint will be set up on Route 138 on Friday night to screen motorists for their sobriety, according to the Monmouth County DWI Task Force.

All westbound motor vehicles on the state highway will be diverted onto Maxwell Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday. Wall Police officers will be working alongside task force members during the four-hour operation, said Allenhurst Police Chief Michael Schneider, task force coordinator.

Additionally, the task force has organized “roving patrols” with multiple police departments on Saturday night to better surveil for impaired drivers on local roads, Schneider said.

Historically, there is an uptick in the number of DWI arrests over Fourth of July weekend, he explained.

“The Monmouth County DWI Task Force strongly encourages everyone to have a safe holiday weekend, by choosing a designated driver, if you are out celebrating this weekend,” Schneider said.
