FIREWORK SAFETY: 4th of July reminders from local officials

TRI-CITIES/WALLA WALLA, Wash. --- Summer is all about barbecues, parades and fireworks. The National Safety Council advises everyone to enjoy fireworks at public displays conducted by professionals, and not to use any fireworks at home. They may be legal, but they are not safe.

Every year, thousands of people are injured badly enough to require medical treatment after fireworks-related incidents, with many of the injuries to children and young adults. While the majority of these incidents are due to amateurs attempting to use professional-grade, homemade or other illegal fireworks or explosives, less powerful devices like small firecrackers and sparklers can also cause significant injuries.

"So, when it comes to fireworks, the best place to light them off is a designated area which is at your home or a green area, have a garden hose and shovel ready to go and make sure it's green," said Franklin County Fire District 3 Chief Mike Harris.

Christpher Price owns two fireworks stands in Walla Walla County. He told us that one of them is the largest tent, this side of the cascades. July 1st is the first day he'll be able to start selling.

"Any product that we bring in into the tent, I've either personally shot it, or I've seen it in a demo. Some of your stands just received a product and they sell it. The other thing that we do is we hand out flyers. So, we have state legal fliers that that the Washington State Fire Marshal's gives us, and we have available as a flyer, it is very helpful and responsible," Price told Apple Valley News Now's Austin Reed.
