WALLA WALLA, Wash. — VA Walla Walla Healthcare is hosting its Summer VetFest Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the VA’s parade field at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center. There will be activities for the whole family, but the event is mostly meant for people to get information about the PACT Act that started earlier this year.

According to the Walla Walla VA, it’s easy to get information out to the veterans who see them, but it’s a lot harder to reach the veterans who don’t go to the VA.

Through the PACT Act, veterans’ eligibility to receive healthcare has expanded, for conditions that may have occurred during military service. Scott Kelter is the medical center director with the Walla Walla VA. He explained that service-connected conditions are now considered presumptive.

“Veterans don’t have to prove that if they have this condition and served at that point in time and in a certain location, they don’t have to prove that that condition is connected to their service. VA presumes that that condition that they might have is connected to their service,” said Kelter. He explained that many veterans who were previously not eligible, or were previously rejected for disability claims, may be eligible now.

There will be representatives on site for Saturday’s event to answer any questions.
