Sink Hole in Newton Gets Temporary Fix, Traffic Resumes Through the Area
NEWTON, NJ – The road that was closed because of a sink hole next to the Green in Newton has been reopened. New Jersey Department of Transportation installed a metal plate over the area to allow traffic to flow while they decide on a plan to fix the issue, according to Newton Police Chief Steven VanNieuwland. A camera was used to look through the pipe near the sink hole and “nothing unusual was found,” according to VanNieuwland.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE TAPINTO.NET NEWSLETTER “It appears the soil may have been improperly compacted after recent construction in the area, leading to soil settlement and the formation of a sink hole,” the chief said. The timeline for the final repair has not been announced. On Tuesday morning a hole in the pavement was discovered by Newton Police Officers in the roadway next to the Green. Summer Food Service Program provides free kids meals at three Port Jervis locations
The U.S. Department of Agriculture kicks off its 2024 Summer Food Service Program this month to provide free meals to area kids at three Port Jervis locations. According to the USDA, the program was established to ensure that low-income children 18 and younger receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. The USDA Food and Nutrition Service administers the Summer Food Service Program at the national level and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) administers it at the state level. Locally, it is operated by sponsors who apply for and are approved to operate the program.

Denville Police Arrest Woman with Active Warrants
DENVILLE, NJ - The Denville Police Department arrested a woman with two active warrants for failing to appear in Roxbury Township Municipal Court and Andover Joint Municipal Court. On July 6, Denville Police stopped a vehicle on Route 10 Westbound with a malfunctioning brake light and a covered license plate. William Schlette, owner of the Bud Bus Co., faces new charges after police and prosecutors executed search warrants in four locations Wednesday, July 10. Schlette, 47, of West Nyack, N.Y., was charged with first-degree possession of more than 25 pounds of marijuana with intent to distribute, first-degree money laundering and second-degree racketeering. He also was charged with possession of more than 6 ounces of marijuana and five counts of conspiracy, both fourth-degree crimes, as well as deceptive business practices.

The Warwick Valley Central School District’s Extended School Year program is in full swing this week as students have been learning to make s’mores, lanterns, and binoculars. Students planted sunflowers outside and immersed themselves in real-life experiences as gardeners.
