On Thursday, July 25 the WPD shared that a victim received a call telling him there was a warrant for his arrest. The victim was sent a letter via text that appeared to be a warrant for his arrest. The letter told the victim to pay $5,500 in bitcoin to the scammer.

“Today, another intended victim received a similar telephone call,” the WPD wrote on social media . “She was instructed not to notify local law enforcement, but to buy gift cards to pay her ‘bond’.”

The WPD said the intended victims hadn’t fallen for the scam but warned the “crooks are very convincing.” The WPD reminds residents that law enforcement will never call individuals to settle a warrant.
